Leadership? I have been involved in church and church leadership a lot the last 25+ years. And over the years I have come across a lot of different type of teaching, especially regarding leadership. In my early years I was involved in an organisation that taught that the leader and his word was Gods word for me that time. I remember how awkward I felt already than. Something inside of me told me that it is not the Biblical way. At that time they only used examples from the Old Testament and warned us that if we did not obey the leaders the same curses will come upon us as they did in the OT.
I knew that this is not right. To make a leaders word equal with the Word of God or even a personal word from Gods spirit is not right. The leader is called to share,protect, minister the word of God to believers. It is not his believer…they belong to God. If you as a leader carry a wrong type of responsibility over other believers you will be unable to exercise your ministry in Faith. You would have to try to convince them that you are Gods voice to them and tell other leaders to help you in confirming this on a regular basis. This happens even today in some places. It is always embarrassing to attend meetings like that. People are not stupid. They recognise if and when leaders are saying things from God and when prophetic words are being proclaimed the NT teaches us all to receive,test, and keep what is good.
I do believe in a Biblical leadership though where we as leaders are “watching over the souls” of the people that God have called us to lead. His people. Our motives and purpose are to be find in Eph 4:11-12 1And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
We are not called to confirm them in to “our vision” only but rather encourage and help people to find their own destiny in God.
Does this mean that God never give instruction,guidance directly through the mouth of leaders? No, but the difference with the NT way compared with GT way is that today all of us can hear the voice of God. What leaders are supposed to do is to confirm and strengthen what God is already saying and also to help you to hear for yourself.
Ok, that was some thoughts I had today. I am alone in our summerhouse together with our new family-member: Rasmus,a russian blue kitten full of energy. I am still recovering from last week and I am tired in my body. But things are getting better always and God is always go.
